Library Resources for Distance and Web-Enhanced Classes
How can Carmichael Library support faculty and students in distance education and Canvas courses?
- Check out the new Featured Library Digital Resources guide that highlights new and relevant streaming video, eBook, and interactive content. The guide provides links to these resources, as well as videos, instructions, and tips.
- Students, faculty, and staff can remotely access the library's online resources using the same username and password as you and your students use to access Canvas.
- We have several hundred thousand electronic resources that you can use to add content you can use in your course. These are searchable through our library website and for remote online usage, and include:
- eBooks
- Journal Articles
- Databases (examples include Films on Demand, ArtSTOR, Digital Theatre +, JSTOR, BioOne)
- All of our electronic resources are easy to integrate in Canvas via hyperlinks that will take you directly to the source. And, two of our major content providers, Films on Demand and Alexander Street, are integrated in Canvas, providing access to nearly 300,000 streaming video segments.
- We can consult with faculty to help find sources as well as the links needed to integrate them into your courses. Our contact information is available online (under About Us, Departments & Staff ).
- For online UM classes, the library offers support services via:
- chat reference service
- email service
- Interlibrary loan (articles and ebook chapters, but not books unless the library building is open)
- If the library building is open, we can scan and send small portions of the textbooks we have on reserve, as well as other books. For a full discussion of copyright under “exigent circumstances”, you can review this post by Harvard’s copyright advisor.
- If you have research assignments in a course, we can assist students with finding digital resources via our online library catalog.
- We can offer instruction via Zoom, if invited, or we can do screencasts. You can also import library instruction modules into your Canvas course. To find current modules, go to Canvas Commons and search for "Montevallo Library" or "Carmichael Library". Or, if you would like to request a module on another topic, just let us know!
