To remain useful and relevant, the library’s collection should be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Weeding is a healthy, continual process that helps to ensure that the collection is meeting the current curriculum, research, and informational needs of faculty and students. Materials that no longer meet the needs of the university community may be removed from the collection. Deselection decisions are based on one or more of the following criteria:
Relevance: is the title pertinent to UM’s curriculum, does it meet the needs of UM’s students and faculty?
Condition: is the title damaged with loose binding, torn, moldy, marked up, etc.
Age: how old is this title, is it a classic work or is the material dated?
Low usage: has the title consistently had little or no circulation?
Currency/accuracy: does the title contain outdated or inaccurate information?
Duplicated: does the library have another copy in print or online?
