The library's Black History Month display will also feature some items from Elvin B. Thompson's collection of rare and antique Black history books and memorabilia. Elvin Thompson is a historian who specializes in tracing African American ancestry. He is also the author of The Blood Running Through My Veins, the story of the Burns family from the slave plantations of Autauga County, AL. In 2005, he was nominated for the NAACP Roy L. Wilkins Award for embodying the spirit of equality and human rights. Elvin Thompson, senior pastor at the Riverside Christian Worship Center, hails from Montevallo and is the older brother of UM's own Joyce Jones, director of Community Engagement and Public Service.
