Coverage: Google Scholar indexes papers, not journals, that are available on the web. The best way to check current coverage of a specific journal in Google Scholar is to search for a sample of their article titles in quotes.

Searching: Google Scholar is very similar to Google; you can use many of the same search options

  • Google Scholar automatically places AND between words
    Example: aphasia autism
  • Place quotation marks around phrases or titles
    Example: "Broca's aphasia"
  • Use OR with terms in parentheses to search for multiple concepts in the same document
Examples: ("Broca's aphasia" OR "Wernicke's aphasia")

Advanced Searching: To do an advanced search, select the three-bar icon (upper left hand corner) and then click Advanced search. You will then see options to search by title, author, journal, date range, etc.

Save, Cite, and Cited by options are also available. The Cited by link lists the number of times an item has been cited by others, and can help you find more recent articles on a topic and trace the evolution of an idea from an original source.

Caveats

  • Indexing is automated and rough. No MeSH subject headings to be found here!
  • Coverage is broad, broad, broad
  • Be careful. Pre-prints, unrefereed articles, and presentation manuscripts abound.
